In large and complex web applications PHP programming method works wonders due to its speed on Linux server and other additional advantages. When PHP is compared with ASP programming platform its performing capability with UNIX and Windows server gives superiority for PHP. PHP uses are widespread, and can include any kind of server functionality that takes user's input and displays or manipulates the input. Because PHP is open source, there is a large community of PHP programmers that help each other with code. Yes! PHP!
Other advantages: lots cheaper than ASP: you've got to have windows hosting for ASP, so you give Mr Gates a big slice of money.
It's easy to set up PHP, MySQL and Apache on your own (Linux, naturally) machine (and they're all free!) and you can build your applications without having to ftp everything to a remote server to try it out. Saves a ton of time - get it going, then ftp the lot.
