Macromedia flash guide

Previously called Macromedia Flash or Shockwave Flash, Adobe’s Flash is a set of multimedia technologies that was developed and distributed by Adobe Systems (usually referred to simply as Adobe) and Macromedia. It has become the premier technology wherein a person can add animation and interactivity to webpages. It’s more common applications are advertisements, animation, and web page components. However, it is also used to integrate videos into web pages as well as developing rich internet content.

Flash supports the bi-directional (two-way) streaming of audio and video, but also is capable of manipulating vector and raster graphics. The scripting language which it employs is called ActionScript, and is available in most web browsers and some cellular phones, as well as other electronic devices using what is called Flash Lite.

The Adobe Flash Player is the most common device associated with creating or displaying Flash, however other devices, software products, and systems are also tools that are used to do this. The Adobe Flash Professional multimedia is what is referred to as an authoring program and is used in the creation of content for the Adobe Engagement Platform --- such as games, movies, and other web applications, as well as content with cellular phones and other such embedded devices.

Flash games or flash movies are files in SWF format and usually have a .swf extension (single wave file) and are oftentimes the object of a web page, usually played in a stand-alone Flash player, or possibly incorporated into a projector. Additionally, they can be incorporated into a self-executing Flash movie (.exe extension found in Windows). Flash video (FLV) files have an .flv extension and are used within a .swf file.

Here is a chronological list of the different Flash players that have been introduced onto the market since 1997 when the first one was launched:

Adobe Labs, which was originally known as Macromedia Labs is the developmental source that does research and development for Adobe products. A person is oftentimes afforded a look at new, emerging products and technology here, inclusive of the latest technology with plug-ins and software.

As of 2007. Adobe has been concentrating on providing the "presentation layer" in hand-held devices. Adobe has been soliciting cellular phone and PDA manufacturers, and is currently partnering to employ Flash Lite as the user interface. The Adobe AIR Project went into development as of November of 2007. More information and tutorials are available at W3Schools.com --- http://www.w3schools.com/Flash/default.asp.
